Basic information:
• Length of rock fall/avalanche barrier: L = 665 m
• Barrier height: H = 3 – 5 m
• Energy absorption capacity: E = 500-1000 kJ
• Expected rock size: V = 1,5 m3
• Slope angle: 35-45°
A traffic on an important regional road between the region of Idrija municipality and the Slovenian capital Ljubljana was in a summer time threatened due by frequent rock fall of a size up to 1,5 m3. On the other hand, in the winter time snow avalanches closed the road several times. In order to protect of the road traffic and prevention of road closures rock fall barriers that served at the same time as avalanche barriers were designed. Since road widening was performed at the same time, the additional slope cut was required. Before the road could be opened to the traffic, the slopes beneath the rock fall/avalanche barriers were protected with rock fall netting as well as a collective berm was constructed.
